3 Lessons on Your Value
Written by Melissa Dawn Johnson

During these days, an uncertain commodity is a JOB. The idea of a job has to be redefined in order to not only survive but also thrive in this changing global economy.

To be employable is not just about job descriptions, companies, roles or even starting a business. The one common denominator among those who succeed in tight times is that they reposition every opportunity around their unique value.

We all have to put in time to gain a return on our investment. The return is typically known as a paycheck. I believe the new model of work is a blend of discovering your true purpose and passion and how to reinvent that into multiple revenue streams to maintain your lifetime value.

For some this may be a side business; and for others it may be a residual business online, others it may be creating meaningful networks and connections through community causes globally. The bottom line is we have to redefine the way we work.

Discovering your unique D.N.A (distinct and notable attributes) will empower you to stay in demand whether you are currently employed, looking for employment, in transition to entrepreneurship, looking for residual business opportunities or taking your existing business to the next level.

Check out this article for more savvy tips on how to work smarter, not harder in tight times. Share your thoughts with us as well, your Brand Me Family!

How to Work From Home
By: Tory Johnson

We often hear about Americans’ losing jobs as employers send work overseas to save money. But have you heard of reverse outsourcing: foreign companies hiring American workers, especially when a specific skill can only be found among U.S. talent? Elance.com and oDesk.com are two popular online marketplaces that connect freelance talent with businesses around the globe, both of which say the growth in non-U.S. companies’ hiring Americans is accelerating at a rapid pace.

American freelancers earned more than $15 million in 2009 from non-U.S. companies and that figure is expected to double this year as companies in India, Singapore, Thailand, Germany, Israel and beyond seek U.S. talent for short- and long-term project work.

Here’s how to grab some of that money:

Create a profile. Visit Elance.com and oDesk.com to create profiles. (They’re free to join and take a commission of about 10% on earnings.)

Don’t wait for businesses to find you. You’re more likely to be hired if you apply – or bid – for projects instead of waiting for someone to discover you.

Consider low-rate projects to get started. The wages are low, making it impossible for U.S. workers to compete effectively with overseas talent for jobs. While not everyone has experienced that challenge, those who do – and have overcome it – suggest accepting a low rate for the first few jobs just to get a foot in the door.

Think globally but small world. When bidding on projects or connecting with companies, find a connection. Make it personal; to let the company know you’re interested in where and who they are.

Be flexible. Flexibility is never more important than when working with overseas clients who are likely in different time zones.

Embrace technology. Instant messaging and Skype make it possible to see and speak to businesses anywhere and everywhere at anytime, which can eliminate barriers of distance and culture.

This iconic film follows the struggle of one media tycoon, who we first are introduced to as a man of high moral standards who slowly becomes more animalistic in his means of management and leadership and loses his highly regarded ethics we saw earlier in the film. This film in a sense depicts a “what not to do” format for running a business, and by displaying the faults you will learn the importance of leadership vs. control as well as maintaining your ethics and respect of employees and those in your life as your business grows.
